As a part of an internship with the Frontier Development Labs HelioLab during the summer of 2025, my team and I developed a novel dataset combining heterogeneous solar and geomagnetic driver data to model the ionosphere, as well as a suite of machine learning models to forecast the state of the ionosphere called IonCast and Ionopy. The ionosphere is a layer of Earth’s atmosphere that is ionized by solar and cosmic radiation, and it plays a crucial role in radio communication, GPS navigation, and space weather phenomena.
We presented three works related to this project at the ML4PhysicalSciences workshop at NeurIPS 2025, and AGU 2025.
